Introduction
Packing for a holiday is already a skill for most mortals, but having to add stoma supplies to the mix can make it feel like a military operation. But it doesn't have to be complicated. With a simple system and a good checklist, packing becomes routine, and you'll never be caught short.
The Golden Rule: Split Your Supplies
Never put all your stoma supplies in one bag. This is the single most important piece of travel advice for ostomates. Airlines lose luggage. Bags get delayed. If every supply you own is in your checked suitcase and it doesn't arrive, you will become so stressed.
Instead, split your supplies between your hand luggage (enough for at least 48 hours), your checked luggage (the bulk), and if possible, a small emergency supply in a travel companion's bag.
How Much to Pack
A good rule is double what you'd normally use. Going for 7 days and usually change once daily? Pack for 14 changes. This covers heat-related extra changes, delayed travel, and the peace of mind of knowing you absolutely will not run out.
If you're going somewhere remote or where supplies won't be available locally, triple it. Better to come home with unused bags than to run out in a country where you can't get more.
Your Travel Supply Checklist
Here's what to pack:
· Pre-cut bags (to avoid needing scissors at security)
· Baseplates / flanges
· Adhesive remover wipes
· Skin barrier wipes
· Dry wipes and tissue
· Disposal bags (scented nappy bags)
· Hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes
· Stoma paste or mouldable seals
· Spare underwear and a change of clothes (in carry-on)
· Support wear - Comfort for journeys , trips and activities
· Travel communication card / medical certificate
· Product names and order codes written down
Pro Tip: Keep Your Carry-On Kit Self-Contained
Put your carry-on supplies in a clear toiletry bag or dedicated pouch. Everything you need for a complete bag change should be in there, so if you need to change at the airport or on the plane, you can just grab the pouch and go. No rummaging, no stress.
