What Actually Happens
When you walk through the body scanner, your stoma bag may show up as an anomaly on the screen. If it does, a security officer will let you know and may ask to do a brief pat-down over your clothing in the abdominal area. That's it.
They will not ask you to remove your bag. They will not ask you to lift your clothing. If you'd prefer privacy, you can request a private screening room; this is your right.
The Travel Communication Card
This card is your best friend at the airport. A travel communication card is a small card, roughly credit-card-sized, that explains you have a medical condition (an ostomy) and are wearing a medical appliance. You simply hand it to the security officer without having to say a word out loud.
You can get one of these cards free from Colostomy UK or the Ileostomy & Internal Pouch Association (IA). Your stoma nurse may also provide one. Some are available in multiple languages, which is very useful for international travel.
Your Rights at Security
· You can carry medical supplies through security, they are exempt from normal liquid limits
· You can request a private screening at any time
· No one can ask you to remove your stoma bag
· You can request Special Assistance through the airport before your flight; they'll meet you and guide you through. Useful if you are anxious and unsure.
The Support Wear Advantage
Many ostomates wear a support waistband or support briefs through security. The garment holds your bag completely flat against your body, creating a smooth profile under your clothes. This can reduce the chance of the scanner flagging your bag, and even if it does, you feel more composed and confident.
One More Thing: Arrive Early
Give yourself extra time at the airport. Not because security takes longer (it usually doesn't), but because removing time pressure removes stress. Rushing through an airport when you're anxious about security is far harder than having a coffee, using the accessible toilet at your leisure, and strolling through without pressure.
