OSTOMY TRAVEL SERIES 4 of 5 - Managing Your Stoma in Hot Climates: A Holiday Survival Guide

OSTOMY TRAVEL SERIES 4 of 5 - Managing Your Stoma in Hot Climates: A Holiday Survival Guide

Introduction

Sun, sea, and a cold drink by the pool,  that's the dream for many. and it's entirely achievable with a stoma. But heat and humidity do affect how your stoma products perform, so a few adjustments will make your warm-weather holiday much smoother.

Why Heat Affects Your Bag

The short version: sweat. When you perspire, the moisture under your baseplate can weaken the adhesive bond. This means your bag might not last as long in a hot climate as it does at home. You're not doing anything wrong, it's just physics but if you know this is likely then you can be prepared. It is entirely manageable with a few simple strategies.

How to Keep Your Baseplate Secure in the Heat

·         Change more frequently,  if you normally get 3 days, plan for 2 in the heat. Pack accordingly

·         Dry your skin thoroughly before applying a new baseplate, use dry wipes, and if needed, a hairdryer on a cool setting

·         Use barrier wipes or spray to create a slightly tackier surface for the adhesive

·         Apply sunscreen after your baseplate is on, not before,  lotions interfere with adhesion

·         Consider mouldable seals or stoma paste for extra waterproofing around the stoma

Keep Your Supplies Cool

Heat can damage stoma products, particularly adhesives. Don't leave supplies in a hot car or on a sun-lounger. Store them in your hotel room (a minibar fridge is ideal for baseplates and seals), and use an insulated bag for supplies you carry during the day.

Stay Hydrated — Seriously

This one's important for everyone, but critical for ostomates. Heat increases fluid loss through sweat, and your stoma already loses more fluid than a non-ostomate's system. Ileostomy patients are particularly at risk of dehydration.

·         Drink water consistently throughout the day — don't wait until you're thirsty

·         Carry oral rehydration sachets and use them if you feel dehydrated or your output becomes very watery

·         Limit alcohol and caffeine in the heat, not to be a kill-joy but both are diuretics

·         Watch for signs of dehydration: dark urine, headache, dizziness, fatigue

Your Hot-Weather Support Wear

Bamboo support wear is your best friend in warm climates. It's naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and antibacterial, which means it stays cooler, drier, and fresher than synthetic fabrics. A bamboo Level 1 boxer is light enough for all-day wear in 35°C heat and keeps your bag secure and discreet under summer clothing.
