Weirdest Places People Have Changed/Emptied Their Bags

We all experience urgency regardless if it is bladder and bowel; yet when we have surgery and an ostomy formed the urgency changes – it becomes “Oh no we need to empty” or “Oh I need to change my appliance!” Both can be upsetting if we are nowhere near a bathroom or somewhere private. I took to Twitter and asked people where the weirdest place they emptied or changed their appliance was and I thought it might be interesting for others to read. For me I was in Whitby and on a pleasure boat ride on the North Sea and all of a sudden I realised I needed to empty and quickly! I was also heavily pregnant with Button at...

Hydration Revisited

Hopefully we are getting to that time of year again where the weather shows some promise of getting warmer and with that promise I wanted to talk again about hydration and just how important it is for all ostomates. For years we get told to drink more water or to ensure we are drinking enough fluids and whilst that is true as ostomates we have to be very careful about what we are drinking. I believe that it is something we should be aware of all year round to be honest because in winter we have the heating on and that can also affect our hydration, but we are generally speaking less active and notice it less. Then in the...

Looking for Help?

Are you struggling with your ostomy? Do you feel alone if your stoma wasn’t formed due to Cancer or Inflammatory Bowel Disease? Well did you know that the internet isn’t just full of horror stories and that social media has evolved past just photos of what you had for dinner or what you have been doing during the day? In this post I want to talk about the main three social media types and how they can hopefully benefit you. So we will start off with the one most people maybe familiar with which is Facebook; obviously I have Ulcerative Colitis which is a form of IBD but 20+ years ago the internet wasn’t what it is now and there...

Mental Health Can Affect Anyone

As we all know many different aspects of mental health can affect us all for a number of reasons and may be with us for a short time or forever. It can be something we seek help for or manage on our own, but no matter how, what, where, who or why mental health should be talked about. I myself have struggled for most of my life with a variety of mental health issues some which have been resolved and others that are a constant daily battle. I know as long as I keep fighting through and take each day as it comes when I feel suicidal I will be okay but I live through my husband and my kids....

Time to Talk Day 2019

This post is a day earlier than I would usually try to post but today is actually a very important day; it is a day where you and every other person should talk about your emotions or mental state. Yes I also believe we shouldn’t need to have a day for this but there is still so much stigma around mental health and talking about it so days like this help as they are promoted on social media. Time to Change is the organisation behind the day in question – they want everyone to have at least one conversation about mental health today. This year’s Time to Talk Day is all about bringing together the right ingredients, to have a conversation...

Normal Person Sick

So this week’s post is a little late as my house was hit by the 24 hr tummy bug and along with a partial blockage I got struck by it twice! I wanted to talk about a little about my experiences with a smaller tummy bug rather than the gastroenteritis I suffered with last year! And how it all affected us differently. So it technically began on my birthday (26th) and my kiddies went to stay with their Grandma so that 00Steve and I could have the night to ourselves – not that we had anything planned in particular. His youngest brother still lives at home and his girlfriend often stays on the weekend. She ended up being the first person to...

Meatballs

This week I wanted to share a recipe that goes down well with my family and on the off chance I decide to eat red meat my stoma tolerates. Sadly I couldn’t get a decent picture of the meatballs as 00Steve and the kids tucked in before I get a chance to take a photo! But I guess that means it is just that tasty! Small wins I guess!! Ra-Ra also enjoys helping make the meatballs which is a great way to encourage your kids to eat better or just eat in general. 1 pack of beef mince 1/2 an onion red/white or 3 shallots 3 mushrooms – yes you may be able to eat mushrooms with little worry to your stoma...

New Year Greetings!

Hello and Happy New Year to all our lovely readers! I trust you had a nice time with family and friends or chilling by yourself if that is your thing?  Do you make resolutions/goals/mini challenges? There is a lot of negativity around resolutions hence the fact I added the other options. I personally prefer goals or challenges and this year I have made a few small goals. I want to be healthier and that doesn’t include anything to do with my weight which is quite a nice change of perspective. I want to be able to eat what I want but sensibly rather than eating like it is my last meal and not making decent choices. I want to be...
