Dressing with an Ostomy

Clothes are pretty much essential for day to day life and they can change your appearance, make your feel more confident and can conceal all sorts of things! I am very open about my ostomy and will let people ask questions or even have a look depending on who they are. Yet I would rather not have it on show; now that is personal preference but also has a lot to do with how much I dislike my stomach and that goes back 20 years. People have often said that I hide my stoma well and they would never know that I had one until I mentioned it. We all have different needs and find things comfortable with our stoma’s...

Eczema and a Stoma

I have to admit I am pretty darn lucky when it comes to my stoma I have very few issues with it; generally it is just trying to regulate my output as one day it can be so thick it pancakes or becomes incredibly watery. However I know it may pale in comparison to some of the skin issues some people suffer with but the patches of eczema that are under my base plate drive me crazy.I have never really suffered with skin issues except dry skin and two random patches of eczema one under my breast and one behind the back of my knee. These are often itchy but are thankfully come and go, however the patches that turned...

Looking for Help?

Are you struggling with your ostomy? Do you feel alone if your stoma wasn’t formed due to Cancer or Inflammatory Bowel Disease? Well did you know that the internet isn’t just full of horror stories and that social media has evolved past just photos of what you had for dinner or what you have been doing during the day? In this post I want to talk about the main three social media types and how they can hopefully benefit you. So we will start off with the one most people maybe familiar with which is Facebook; obviously I have Ulcerative Colitis which is a form of IBD but 20+ years ago the internet wasn’t what it is now and there...

Can your stoma change shape?

You may know by now that stoma’s off all types can come in different shapes and sizes due to the type of ostomy you have. But did you know that they can change shape too?  Now I can only from experience talk about ileostomies (as that’s what I have) But yes they can in fact change shape! Both of my stoma nurses have over the last three years have had differing opinions on the shape of my stoma because when my stomach is relaxed it was oval and when stretched it was round. To combat this I had been using an oval convex bag from Peak Medical but cutting the hole round. Last week I had a routine appointment to...

Mental Health Can Affect Anyone

As we all know many different aspects of mental health can affect us all for a number of reasons and may be with us for a short time or forever. It can be something we seek help for or manage on our own, but no matter how, what, where, who or why mental health should be talked about. I myself have struggled for most of my life with a variety of mental health issues some which have been resolved and others that are a constant daily battle. I know as long as I keep fighting through and take each day as it comes when I feel suicidal I will be okay but I live through my husband and my kids....

Preparing for Ostomy Surgery

This week I wanted to share with you what I found helpful in preparing myself for ostomy surgery. Some of these may not be for everyone but I took to Twitter to ask other ostomates what they did too. Preparing for any surgery can be a scary time; whether it is your choice or is an emergency – some emergency surgery isn’t a case of deciding and then whoosh you’re in theatre it could still be a day or two wait. I found that I felt like I shouldn’t be scared about my surgery because it was something I fought to have but deep inside I was fighting myself as I was still terrified but the other side of me...

Time to Talk Day 2019

This post is a day earlier than I would usually try to post but today is actually a very important day; it is a day where you and every other person should talk about your emotions or mental state. Yes I also believe we shouldn’t need to have a day for this but there is still so much stigma around mental health and talking about it so days like this help as they are promoted on social media. Time to Change is the organisation behind the day in question – they want everyone to have at least one conversation about mental health today. This year’s Time to Talk Day is all about bringing together the right ingredients, to have a conversation...

Normal Person Sick

So this week’s post is a little late as my house was hit by the 24 hr tummy bug and along with a partial blockage I got struck by it twice! I wanted to talk about a little about my experiences with a smaller tummy bug rather than the gastroenteritis I suffered with last year! And how it all affected us differently. So it technically began on my birthday (26th) and my kiddies went to stay with their Grandma so that 00Steve and I could have the night to ourselves – not that we had anything planned in particular. His youngest brother still lives at home and his girlfriend often stays on the weekend. She ended up being the first person to...
