The reassuring answer is YES, you can swim with a stoma.
You can swim in all sorts of places - a pool, the ocean, a lake, or even a river. Wherever you feel most at ease is where you should be. Maybe you like swimming laps, or perhaps you prefer joining a water fitness class. You could also spend time paddling around with your kids, or just relax and float on your back, taking in the sensation of being in the water.
Swimming is actually one of the best forms of exercise after stoma surgery, and for most people, it is much less complicated than they first imagine.

Common worries and the reality
It is completely normal to feel nervous before your first swim. Most people worry about the same things:
Will water get into my stoma?
Will my bag come off?
Will people notice?
Will my bag show?
Will it stay in place?
Will I feel comfortable walking around the pool or beach
The good news is that you don't have to worry about water getting into your stoma. If you have a pouch that fits properly, it will stay in place just fine. Plus, with the right kind of swimwear, you can keep your bag comfortable and hidden from view. This means you can enjoy swimming and other water activities without any problems.
A fresh bag, emptied just before you swim, along with supportive swimwear, is usually all you need.
When can you start swimming?
Most people are advised to wait around 6–8 weeks after surgery, once wounds are fully healed. However, everyone heals differently, so always check with your stoma nurse or surgeon before getting back in the water.
The best advice we can give
For your first swim, choose a quiet time at your local pool. Empty your bag before you get in, take your time, and start small.
Getting into the water for the first time can be really tough; it's like your mind is stopping you from taking the plunge as it races through what might happen. But once you do it, then those initial anxieties should start to fade and next time it will feel a little easier.
What should you wear?
A very common challenge for people with a stoma who want to go swimming is figuring out what to wear.
Not everyone is bold or confident enough to leave their bag uncovered. And so Stoma-specific swimwear is designed to help you feel secure and confident. It usually has a higher waistline and internal support to hold your bag close to your body, & which stops it from floating too much and keeps it discreetly covered.
Options include high-waisted swim shorts, swim briefs, and tankini or vest tops. They look like regular swimwear, but with the added support and coverage that can make all the difference.

Here are some recommendations you might want to consider
Option 1: Stoma-specific swimwear
This is the best choice for many people.
Purpose-designed stoma swimwear usually includes a higher waistline, an internal support panel, and quick-drying fabric. It helps keep your bag secure, supported and discreetly hidden.
From the outside, it looks like stylish, high-waisted swimwear.
Ladies’ options include high-waisted swim briefs or shorts and matching vest-style tops for extra coverage. This can work better than a one-piece for easier access to the pouch without having to remove the entire costume. Men’s options include supportive swim boxers with internal support. These are a fitted design and so are often combined with a looser 'board short' over the top, though not essential.
Option 2: A support waistband under regular swimwear
If you've already got a swimsuit that you're happy with, you might want to consider wearing a support waistband underneath it.
If you're looking to wear something under your high-waisted swim shorts, trunks, or swimsuit, a black or dark-coloured support waistband is a great option. It can provide the support you need without being too noticeable. For example, a 7" or 10" Level 2 waistband can be really helpful in keeping your bag secure, and it won't add too much bulk to your outfit. This can be especially useful if you plan on being active or moving around a lot while you're wearing your swimwear. An even lighter option can be the level 1 waistband
This can be a great choice if you're looking for something that's both supportive and discreet, and you're not quite ready to invest in swimwear that's specifically designed for stomas just yet.
Option 3: Stoma caps or mini bags
When it comes to swimming, some individuals prefer to use a stoma cap or mini bag. This is because they lie flat against the body, providing a more discreet appearance.
These are often a good choice for individuals who have a colostomy and can predict when they will need to empty their bag. However, it's really important to talk to a stoma nurse before deciding on this option, because it might not work for everyone, especially if you have high output. They can help you figure out if it's the right fit for you.
Our recommendation
For many individuals, wearing stoma-friendly swimwear provides the perfect combination of feeling confident, getting the support they need, and looking great.
The goal is straightforward: to feel comfortable and secure with your stoma, so you can finally relax and have fun in the water, without it being a constant worry.
